Three Fort Collins men were killed when a car crashed into trees near Bellvue about 11:50 p.m. Saturday.
The 1993 Mustang was traveling more than 100 mph when the driver lost control on a curve on northbound Larimer County Road 23 just outside of Bellvue, Colorado State Patrol Master Trooper Ron Watkins reported.
The impact when the car hit three trees split the Mustang into three pieces, he said.
Three men were thrown from the car and pronounced dead on the scene. They were identified as Christopher Ragan, 19, Derek Jones, 20, and Jacob Ricke, 20, Watkins reported.
“This was such a horrific crash that investigators believe it will take several days to determine which of the trio was the driver,” Watkins reported.
The extent of the damage will make it impossible to tell if the men were wearing seat belts, according to Watkins.
Troopers continue to investigate the crash, but Watkins said they think alcohol or drugs were involved. The State Patrol did not specify what led troopers to that conclusion, and toxicology tests could take more than a week.
