DENVER A Firestone man was sentenced Friday to an 18-month prison term for illegally selling venomous snakes, but he is likely to be out of jail in the next two months.
Brook Bernston, 37, entered guilty pleas in May to charges of selling illegally taken wildlife and possessing firearms illegally. Bernston was arrested during a raid on his home on June 28, 2003, but was denied bail because of a prior case in which he failed to appear in court.
Hes been in custody for 13 months and 13 days. He will be out in a month and a half or two months, defense attorney Harvey Steinberg told U.S. District Judge Lewis Babcock during the 30-minute sentencing hearing. Steinberg also asked that Bernston be housed in the Englewood detention center where he has been held since his arrest instead of being sent to a federal prison
