The following questions represent a portion of those asked in a 610-interview telephone survey administered in late May and early June, 2004. The survey was conducted by The Public Information Corporation of Littleton, Colorado for the Boulder County Board of Commissioners.

When the county buys open space it is not always in good ecological condition. If you had to choose between spending open space sales tax money, improving the ecological condition of an existing property, such as restoring wetlands or native prairie grasslands, OR buying more property, which would you choose?
Improve ecological condition
Buy more property

The economic slowdown has significantly impacted the Boulder County open space program. Open Space sales tax collections are lagging. Even if the economy improves the County will not be able to purchase much if any additional open space, or to increase the level of maintenance for the current open space areas, for a number of years. No decision has been made, but the County Commissioners are considering suggestions that a question be included on next November’s ballot that would propose increasing the open space sales tax by one-tenth of a cent. That comes to one cent on a $10 purchase or, put another way, 10 cents on a $100 purchase.

If such a question were on the ballot, and it would increase the open space sales tax by one-tenth of a cent for a maximum of 20 years to pay for more open space and increase the level of maintenance, how do you think you would vote, for or against?
