Newspaper in Education Helps Improve Student Test Scores.

In a recent study of 22 cities across the country (including those in Colorado) schools using Newspaper in Education newspapers were compared with those who did not. Local or state reading tests were used as the measure. In all cities the results were the same, creating a strong case in support of the value of NIE, although it does not prove that NIE was the only factor in success on the tests.

For all students there was a 10% increase in test scores for those who used newspapers compared to those who did not.

In all cases the more newspapers that were used throughout the year (the intensity of use) the greater the gain in test scores.

In all cases the greatest increase was gained by middle school students.

In schools that were high in low-income, non-English speaking, or minority students the increase in test scores for the newspaper group was as much as 29%.

Newspaper in Education does lead to an increase in test scores. The more newspapers used the greater the increase, and the greatest increase was with minority or disadvantaged students.

Lock In Learning

lockResearch shows that newspaper use in the
classroom:

  •  Raises student achievement scores in language arts, social studies, and math over those of counterparts who only use text books.
  • Elevates reading skills by one or more grade levels.
  •  Increases student awareness of the world and community, and has a positive effect on attitudes toward school, community, and subject matter
  • Improves verbal interactions, student motivation, and student behavior.
