DENVER — The state Senate’s 17 Republicans are scheduled to select a new leader today.
Vying for the minority leader’s post — majority Democrats hold 18 of the Senate’s 35 seats — are Sens. Andy McElhany of Colorado Springs, Steve Johnson of Larimer County and John Evans of Parker.
The election essentially will fill a vacancy created when Senate Minority Leader Mark Hillman of Burlington resigned in June to become acting state treasurer. Hillman is running the treasurer’s office while Treasurer Mike Coffman is on military leave, expected to last through March.
GOP senators participating in a June telephone conference selected Norma Anderson of Lakewood to serve as minority leader until most or all of them could be present for Monday’s secret-ballot leadership election.
Anderson made it clear at the time that she planned to resign as minority leader when the Senate Republican Caucus picks someone to fill that position through the end of 2006.
