March 11 is the date for changing our clocks for daylight savings time, and while early daylight savings time might affect some, such as dairy cows who get milked earlier, plants couldn’t care less.

With spring nearing, now is the time to prune
It’s nearing time for bud swell on many of our woody plants, which is a welcome sign for gardeners in spring. This is the perfect time of year to prune. Woody plants suffering snow damage, needing a canopy thinning or renewal from old age will all benefit from a nice haircut.

There’s an old song about anticipation and how waiting makes people crazy. Gardeners understand this, especially as February rolls towards March. The weather ever so slightly warms our skin, seed catalogs litter the house and the scent of spring is in the air. We get an indefinable restlessness, like an itch just below the skin.

Discover the hidden meanings of flowers
In Victorian times, messages of love were sent with flowers, each type and color having its own meaning. Should someone send you a bouquet of red roses, they were speaking of love. Should the roses be yellow, they were saying they’re jealous.

Houseplant pests are annoying, prolific
One of the more annoying problems with houseplants is that they often become hotels for fungus gnats. These are the tiny bugs that slowly fly about in winter, often drifting right around our heads. Naturally this causes otherwise calm people to start flailing their hands in front of their faces, grasping at what seems to be thin air in an attempt to squish the pesky insect.

Use houseplants to take you to the tropics
Several years ago I was given a large banana tree in early December. The weather turned cold later in the day, and to protect the plant I left it in my office. There it stayed until April when the weather warmed enough to move it home.
